This is an exciting place. You going here?, nothing to worry about, keep yourself to yourself, if you are driving check your transport out, in short if it is fitted to your vehicle and it doesn't work, take it out. You will pay more for made up on the spot road violations in Zambia than anything else, including wrong tyre pressure, you will be informed of what the pressure should be immediately after they have decided it is wrong, and 2 wheels on the same axle Both with the wrong pressure doubles the fine, don't get smart and produce a hand book you will be pulled off the side of the road where guns will be waved around (just to scare you) then your fine amount will be trebled. Never at anytime will the smile drop off the policeman's face, and not at any stage will they raise their voice. If you are travelling the western boarders watch out for false road blocks, look for ID on the uniforms, stray or AWOL troops from either Angola or the Congo operate in this region, do not be scared if you encounter these people do not be over generous, they will be more than excited with a 10 day old news paper, money has no use to them, they are desperate, hungry and tired, offer food and clothing and you will be assured safe passage. on the whole exercise extremes of caution and absolute courtesy and you will enjoy this emerging tourist attraction. The country has splendid scenery and some wonderful camp sites, the roads are in surprisingly good condition. I can't wait to go back... |
