We finally made it here in 2011 to see my saint, Saint Sara, Sarah le Kali.

The Camargue was as I had imagined as a child - white horses, black bulls and flamingos. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer was a cheerful little red-roofed Margate with the addition of sunshine and good French cooking.

This place bakes in the sun - the heat knocked me sideways. Unless you are very young and resilient, make sure you have a laid back place to return to at night. We stayed in La Palunette, a 15 minute walk out of town and a delight. I've reviewed it n Trip advisor
