The great thing about Virtual Tourist is that it provides a safe outlet for that urge to tie your guest to the sofa while you bore them with your holiday snaps.

After nearly 2 years on VT, I have noticed a tendency in myself to adopt a relentlessly bright and breezy, if not bossy, tone when writing tips, but my style doesn't always reflect my mood at the time! After all, one does sometimes get tired: The Acropolis? The Niagara Falls? The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World? (maybe in the morning... )
Anyway, Four things we never did in Nafplio
and Top ASBO pub, Tenby reflect this new realism.

Your favourite bar or pub
is a new section - love to here your views. Check it out here
Llanthony Abbey

Spincat has only been travelling around her South East London manor for the last year; my last trip was to Llanthony Abbey in the Brecon Beacons National Park This is a secret place, a hotel in a ruined abbey, set in a remote and lovely valley far away in the Black Mountains of Wales.
White Mountains - Crete

Crete is a place I'll keep returning to, as long as I can hobble or hop. I've been there 8 times - will take me lifetime to get to know the place. That means my tips will take lifetime too... but meanwhile, I hope you will find something useful for your journey here.
I have a seperate short section covering the Cretan city of Rethymnon
Toulouse shopfronts

Toulouse

My Toulouse pages cover spectacular cave art in the Pyranees, and a spectacular city.
Istanbul

Istanbul

I am not a good traveller. Came back from Istanbul earlier this year and straight away went down with flu. Read about how I got it, living the high life on the Bosphoros. I've been doing some travelling around my own counry ever since then, but Istanbul got under my skin and I kep thinking about going back.

For information on some off beat UK destinations :-

Dungeness in Kent, ugly and beautiful at the same time, a stretch of wild shingle and an artists' colony all in the shadow of a nuclear power station;

Cerne Abbas the little village with the big giant

Glastonbury

A common question on VT forum is "What makes a good day out or an overnight trip for someone based in London?" So I am building an album that covers days out of this kind - you'll find this at this bottom of this page.
Brecon Beacons

Cardigan Bay where I stayed in the pretty romany caravan (vardo).

Tenby ... stretches of soft sand and magical rock pools ...

Brecon Beacons ... Wilderness, mountains, castles, wild ponies, sheep, birds of prey ...

and the little border town of Hay-on-Wye, Town of Books
Alcazar gardens - Seville

Sevilla, Don't miss travelogue of a Sevilla grandmother dancing flamenco with a macho man in a dress!

hi spincat , agree entirely with your good pub criteria , can confirm that the square and compass in worth matravers , dorset , is indeed a real gem. Bulls Head at Craswall near Hay is a beautiful location not far from Llanthony.

Glad you liked the garden pictures - it is beginning to look like spring at last! Books - Middlemarch and The Poisonwood Bible 2 of my favourites. Have you read A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry? Hard read in amny ways but I recommend it!
