After my initial visit in 2001, my introduction went as follows:

There really isn't much here, but the city has some very interesting elements. It's fairly dead, without much going on, especially on the weekends, and the weather is pretty dreadful to someone like me - hot and sunny in the summer, dry, dry, dry year round, fairly dusty and periodically prone to salt-dust storms from the lake area.

The most fascinating aspect of the city is what it reveals about the history of Utah, fairly unusual for the US, and how the LDS church dominates the town. Most of the biggest buildings in downtown belong to the LDS church and it is fascinating to see an area, especially in the US, that it so intertwined with one religious group.

As of 2012:

I have briefly been through here once again much more recently and although I was not able to spend much time, I can say that the city has changed a little bit. Overall, it is more lively, with some new, bigger buildings that didn't exist in 2001, plus more interesting eateries, and a somewhat more diverse, cosmopolitan air overall. I cannot speak to any further details, however.
