Pocatello is one of the two largest cities in Idaho outside of the Boise area. It is very close in size to nearby Idaho Falls, a little to the north, and the two are the largest and most important population and commercial centres in SE Idaho.

Pocatello has long been an important railroad junction and agricultural centre, with much of Idaho's potato industry located in the region.
