"Andersonville" Andersonville by WulfstanTraveller

Andersonville Travel Guide: 1 reviews and 4 photos

Andersonville is preserved as a memorial to soldiers who died during the U.S. Civil War and especially prisoners of war who died in captivity during the war. It is infamous for its horrid conditions and as a place where roughly 15,000 U.S. prisoners died in captivity under the Confederate States (the South, often called the "Rebels"). This is almost half of the US prisoners who died during the war according to statistics. In reality, however, and something that is often forgotten, is that roughly the same number of Southern prisoners, according to some statistics even more, died in U.S. prison camps. The point is that for a variety of reasons, both sides suffered greatly and were at times inhumanely cruel to each other and this is a striking reminder of that and hopefully will help prevent it in the future.
