Rio Vista is a small town on the west bank of the Sacramento River in the great Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta at the heart of California.

This area is a rich agricultural area and was long at the heart of the state's transportation system, which relied heavily on boats from San Francisco through the delta north to Sacramento or south to Stockton, bases for going to and from the gold fields of the Sierra Nevada.

Today, there are numerous ecological issues regarding the environmental effects on the delta and its ecology.
