Bodega Bay is possibly most famous from the Hitchcock film The Birds, which was set and partly filmed here.

It has a smallish but good natural harbour created by Bodega Head and has thus long been a centre of fishing in the region. In fact, Bodega Bay is now the consolidated base for fishing and crab fishing on this entire stretch of the California coats, but unfortunately the fish and crab industries are troubled with depleted stock and price issues. Nevertheless, good, fresh seafood is still to be had and the area has a history of good seafood restaurants as a result of the fishing industry. I remember going to eat here as a kid and seeing the fish being hauled off the boats at the docks right next to the restaurant and while this atmosphere is not quite the same anymoe, one can still go buy fresh fish as well as eat at restaurants.

Bodega Bay is also the main settlement on the coast of Sonoma County, one of the area's blessings. The water is normally ice cold, but the beaches and coves are beautiful. While our weather in Sonoma County is not normally very hot compared to other parts of the state (except Cloverdale and the areas to the east), it can sometimes get pretty hot in the interior of the county during the summer. Luckily, if one wants to escape the heat and sun, one can just drive over to Bodega Bay for dinner or on the weekend and enjoy the cool, wet fog and sea breezes. Even if it is 90 degrees in Santa Rosa, for example, at the same time it's probably no more than 65 in Bodega Bay. It's an easy way to get refreshed.
