Ephesos

by WulfstanTraveller - last update: Jan 14, 2009

Efes/Ephesos/Ephesus was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire and was the capital of the province of Asia/Asia Minor. The ruins are simply extensive and although there has been a fair amount of reconstruction, this sight is still worth visiting for all. There is a lot here and because of the city's size and importance, it has some very impressive structures, including a very large theatre and the Library of Celsos, among others.

The two major towns nearby with good facilities are Selcuk, which is right next to Efes, and Kusadasi, which is a little further but has more resorts, is on the water, etc. Both have good points: Kusadasi is better for a relaxing stay on the water while Selcuk tends to be cheaper and much less touristy, while the town has some neat buildings, etc.
