Ipswich, where's that then? | How many see this city first- me too |
For some time I wanted to come ashore, but dreaded the idea of being stuck back in Ipswich. When the company was bought out, I managed to get myself a position in the new regime up here.
OK, it's not Hong Kong and it's a long way from London, but there's plenty here to do and lots of places in th region that make it a pleasant place in it's own right. |
| Union Street from Castlegate |
| | Life in the Granite City As yet I haven't hit winter, but spring and so far, summer have been a vast improvement over Suffolk. They actually know what the countryside is, and hills are the name of the game. The beaches are long and wide and the rivers are clean. Seals and Dolphins are spotted often, and with 2 universities, there's nightlife as well as wildlife (the students can count as that too).
Topping it all, there's good food, lots of coffee shops and very motorbike friendly roads. Suits me to a tee. (Lots of golfers too) |
Historical and Hysterical Being an old city, but having 2 universities and lots of new money from the oil and associated industries means that Aberdeen has a good supply of history and historical buildings and also lots fo culture to go in them and keep the city going. From the historical marketplace at Castlegate, you can look down Union Street and see many Churches and other old buildings. Just off to the side of Union Street is Belmont Street with all it's bars and restaurants. All around there are live performances- be they music, dance or comedy. The city is still growing and has a few years left yet. Once the oil's finished though, who knows? |

| Pros: | "Plenty in the city to do, and the countryside around" | | Cons: | "Grey, courtesy of the granite, windy and wet." | | In A Nutshell: | "Good quality of life, all you need in a city." |

They claimed that the oil would only last 20 years when it was discovered in the 60's but technology and recovery are getting better all the time so were safe for a bit yet | iaint Sun May 20, 2007 13:30 UTC fascinating; its my mum's hometown, and I lived there 7 years |
