Where? Here! New Deer.

by mrjemm - last update: Dec 11, 2004

Small, quiet and typical.

Going in.
I'd never heard of this town until recently, and I think very few people have heard of it- on the way I asked how to get here at the petrol station in the nearest town, but the lady had no idea. Well, VTer Birvine asked me about it, and my curiosity was piqued. Yesterday I had a day off and the weather was pleasant, my new bike kicking to go for a spin, so I thought to myself... Where shall I venture. Hmmmm, how about New Deer?
OK, as good a place as any as an excuse to buzz the country lanes on my new toy.
Charming locals

Twinned with Royston Vasey, pop. 73.

I got a bit lost on the way here as I didn't have a map and the roads are all rather poorly sign-posted around here, but finally I stumbled on this sleepy hamlet. OK, so maybe a thursday afternoon is not likely to be the busiest time in a country village, but it didn't show many signs of highlife. It was however in very pretty surroundings and appeared to have everything it needed and be well kept. However I did feel a rather "local" feel to the place, as if I stood out and would be told not to touch the "precious things" in the local shop. I was wrong though, the locals were friendly inthe newsagents.
Over the fields and far.

Passing through.

It's actually one of the larger communities on the road between Turiff and Peterhead, along with the very distinctly named "Old Deer"- although I wish it was called "Old Dear" (hehe). Most of the places around here were just a couple of houses, farms and maybe a general store. Here was a selection of shops and amenities for your discerning villager. Positively cosmopolitan!

How quaint. Maybe we should twin it with Red Deer, Alberta :-))
