Longtailing around the Khlongs. The best little adventure in a city I've come across. I love to go down the Chao Phraya and get a longtail to take me around the back-canals over the other side. No, not a slow boat with a bunch of others, but a noisy, smelly speed machine. Seeing green fields, paddies and leafy groves in the heart of this particular city is fantastic, and look at the range of homes back there- shacks collapsing next to mansions. Just be prepared for the rip-prices of the drinks hawkers and the fact that the drink they persuade you to buy for the driver will be "opedned later" (sold back).

Day and night, the Chao Praya River is a facinating and fulfilling area to spend time exploring, vegging out, commuting or whatever. There is always so much activity here, with barges chugging up and down, being zopped past by longtails and river buses. Down on the banks there's plenty of kids braving the indescribable gunk to take a dunk under a ramshackle pier. At night the restaurants on the bank are the coolest spots to enjoy a beer and fine food, however simply prepared. TO bad my favourite place was due to move away from here in recent months. (I don't know the name anyway).
