The oldest parts of Fes date back to about year 925 when some 2000 Arab families came to this area from Kairouan in Tunisia as refigees.
Mosques were built, and the old city was slowly created, including the huge medina.
For me, the best part of our entire trip to Morocco, was the visit to the medina in Fes. It was an onslought on the senses - sound, smell, sight and feel. It cannot be described easily, it was like walking into a totally different world. Each part of the medina was dedicated to a craft or a certain type of goods, the most famous (and infamous) being the tanneries. Wow! |
