| Ashanti King Nana Okyere-Antwi I |
One tradition tells how the Ashanti people emerged from a hole in the ground near Lake Bosumtwi, whereas another says they descended from the sky. The kingdom is still holds immense power, responsibility and respect.
There are several Ashanti kings, with one main ‘head’ king overseeing them all. In order to qualify to become a king, there are certain prerequisites that need to be met: No previous prison sentence, no visible scars and no adultery! Meeting these criteria you then need to be accepted by the people before being carried through the town in a palanquin.
The Ashanti kings enjoy a matrilineal succession system, which means that lineage is strictly through the mother’s heritage – for instance, the current king’s sister’s son may very well become the next heir to the throne |

lynnehamman Thu Aug 27, 2009 08:17 UTC Really interesting cultural tips, Grete. All that gold jewellery! Interesting the way the king is chosen. The tradition of the royal umbrella happens in India too-or used to. Good photos. | Trekki Sun Apr 8, 2007 11:21 UTC Fascinating !!! | sachara Thu Jan 25, 2007 18:15 UTC Grete, interesting information about the Ashanti. I stayed with a Ashanti family during my first visit to Kumasi and they brought me to the village where they make kente. I love those colours. | kyoub Sat Jan 13, 2007 23:07 UTC This is an excellent page, Grete. A very interesting look at the Ashanti people. |
