Things To Do: Nalova Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • A beautiful long, soft sandy beach, with crystal clear turquoise water, a fabulous reef off shore and gently swaying palm trees. Sounds like paradise? It certainly was.

We stopped here for the morning on our cruise, and we had the opportunity to swim, sunbathe, snorkel, go out with a glass bottom boat, paddle boarding or just snoozing in the shade.

Morning tea/coffee was served under the trees, as was a BBQ lunch.

    Things To Do: Underwater World
  • Tip Rating:
  • Both in Nalova Bay and Nanuya Lai Lai we were able to go snorkelling, and at Nalova Bay there were glass bootom boats too for thos e people who didn't want to get wet or were not very confident in the water. The water was very warm, very clear and very shallow. There were many nice corals, and plenty of colourful fish to observe.

    Things To Do: Yasawairara
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yasawairara is a village on the island of Yasawa, the most northerly of this group of islands, and the one after which the group has been named.

The island is about 22km long and less than ome km wide.

Yasawairara is situated in the north of the island, and is the most traditional of the villages found here. It is also the seat of the Tui Yasawa - the chief of the island group.
The village we visited is still very traditional (read primitive) - the only building to have electricity is the church and water comes from a spring. The doctor visits every two months or so and the children have 2 1/2 hours each way to school.

On our way back to the ship, the villages had laid out a little market for us, with shells, corals, wood carvings and the ubiquitous T-shirts. I did partake in some retail therapy, more to help with the local economy than anything else.

We travelled here on board a Blue Lagoon Cruise, and spent the afternoon in the village.

The nearby beach is known as Vuawalu Brach (eight month beach) referring to the fine sand that is said to take eight months to rid yourself of. It certainly was a beautiful fine sandy beach! :-)

    Things To Do: Fish Feeding
  • Tip Rating:
  • After lunch we wandered over to the point on Nanuya Lai Lai Island for fish feeding. Alan said to be there at 14.00. Several of us were, but no Alan. It was Fijian time of course! He turned up eventually, with a large plastic bag full of bread. We could all do our own feeding, and he had encouraged us to bring the snorkelling gear, which I was really pleased about, as it was absolutely amazing under water. I used a whole roll of film just on the fish feeding, and by the time I surfaced again, everybody else had gone, there was just me, my mum and Alan. It really was unbeliveable from below the surface - definitely one of the highlights of the cruise.

Things To Do: Nanuya Lai Lai
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nanuya Lai Lai is a private island owned by the Blue Lagoon Cruises.

We spent a beautiful day on the island, with many options for activities available, or you could just be as lazy as you like. What a perfect place to snooze in the shade!

We were carted off the cruise ship by little shuttle boats, and because we were there for the duration of the day, you had to be fairly organised. Although, they would take you back to the ship any time you wanted to.

    Things To Do: Jet boating
  • Tip Rating:
  • Having been on the Shotover Jet in Queensland, New Zealand, we jumped at the chance of signing up for the jet boat ride here in Fiji.

It is only just down the lane from the hotel and they pick you up from your accommodation. The boats are the same style as they use in New Zealand, the main difference between the two trips was 20 degrees! (temperature that is).I sat in the front this time. Same speed, same turns, warmer water. I got soaked! Not just sprayed, the water actuallt poured over me, like somebody had emptied a bucket!

Then we broke down! We seem to have a knack for breaking down in boats - I hope that doesn't go for the cruise too. The driver tried to repair it and sent off for another driver, who also couldn't manage to repair it.

Eventually we had to clamber out and scramble up the bank to wait for the van to come across the golf course to pick us up. Back at base we were offered a refund or another trip. We are goign again of course!

We had a different driver this time, Colin. He was a real showman. The same spin for the camera, then off we went down the mangrove rivers at high speed with a few spins and narrow misses of the sides, stilted huts, bridges etc. I think this was even better than the original jet boat in Queenstown, New Zealand. It was certainly longer and better value for money, although the canyons made the NZ trip more interesting.

The marine life was amazing--I don't snorkle, so I'd be up in the glass bottom boat...peering down into the depths.
