Like so many other towns we visited in West Africa, we didn’t actually spend any time in the city itself. Basically, the towns were the only places that had suitable overnight accommodation for 15 Westerners, so we would spend the night in hotels in the cities. Sokode was conveniently places on the route between Kara and the north and our crossing in to Benin to the East. Sokode is the second largest city in Togo, with a population of nearly 100,000 people. It is a major centre for commercial trade - industrial activities there include cotton ginning and sugar processing. The name Sokode means to close and was given this title because of barriers frequently erected by the tribal groups trying to control the caravan trade. The town in the main seat of the Kotokoli chief, the Uro. The Kotokoli settled in this region in the 1600s from modern day Burkina Faso. |
