Meroe

In 1992 I dscovered an article about the pyramids at Meroe and my interest was immediately roused. Since then, Sudan has been ravaged by civil war and famine, and has not been the ideal holiday destination.

This year, having the time and money, and the availability of a "package tour" to the Sudan, it seemed only right to seize the opportunity.

Sudan has more pyramids than its much more famous neighbour, although the pyramids here at Meroe are nowhere near as large or as well known as Giza for instance.

Unfortunately, early Italian explorer Giuseppe Ferlini smashed the top of all forty pyramids in 1820 in his quest for treasure! :-(

Meroe looks like a great place. Sudan has never been a place I've had particular interest in, but these ruins look nice.

Agree with you about the reconstruction- especially when painted with garish colours. An archaeologist friend explained that you have to make it clear whenever repairs etc have been done by using a different material.

Sorry to correct you but there is a camp nearby run by Italians. You can see it from the site. It also possible to sleep on the site if you have a sleeping bag and ask the officials kindly for permission! Anyway - I agree it’s a great place!

An amazing page on this really Off-the-Beaten-Track location! One does not hear too much about tourism in Sudan these days, so it was great to have your impressions. Thank you for the fantastic photos!

A very interesting and informative page. It must have been great walking around the pyramids without anyone else there.
