In the 5th century AD, Qasr Libya was the residence of the bishop, and there are still a couple of churches of great religious interest here. The Western Church is known for its extraordinary architecture, and the Eastern Church for its splendid 50 pieces of mosaics from the 6th century. The mosaics, which are in excellent condition, depict a wide an interesting range of subjects such as the Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria, once of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Other subjects include pagan themes, as well as images of humans and animals. The church was converted to a fort during the Turkish occupation of the area. The mosaics remained hidden until they were rediscovered by accident by dam workers in 1957 and are now housed in the museum. It is considered one of the world’s finest collection of mosaics. |
