One of the main drawbacks of visiting Larabanga is the self-confessed guides and little children who want to be your friend. The conversation starts out quite innocuous, with questions like “where are you from” and “what’s your name”, but invariably ends with requests for money. Hoards of little children will descend on you as you get out of your vehicle. We were fortunate enough to have a tour leader who shooed them away to let us take photos of the mosque in peace before they came back en mass. He also arranged a local guide to explain to us all about the mosque, its history and legends.

Fun Alternatives: If you are going to give, donate your money and/or pens, stationery directly to the school, teacher or village chief. Do not encourage begging from the young children as it will tempt them to a life of begging instead of getting a valuable education.
