African Handbag

Women in nearly all the rural areas, as well as many urban cities, carry a huge bowl like this as their ‘handbag’. It can hold anything and everything – vegetables or meat bought in the market, water from the well, firewood, washing for the river ‘laundry’, good to be sold at the market or goods bought at the market. The options are endless.

Burnt remains - Mole National Park

Burnt remains

Bushfires

It is common in many parts of West Africa, not just in Mole National Park, for the villagers to burn away part of the undergrowth to encourage the regeneration of new life. This helps in the feeding of wild and domestic animals. We came across huge flames in places, but here in Mole, all we saw was the charred remains of the fire. Be careful when walking through the burnt undergrowth, as the ash gets everywhere – my beige trousers were filthy!
