Yendi is reputed to be the largest village in West Africa (with a population of nearly 45,000 people) and is the administrative centre for many ethnic groups, including the Dabomba. The seat of the Ya Na (the overlord of the Dagomba Kimgdom) literally translated as King of Absolute Power, is a collection of cow skins. Thus whenpeople talk of the political history of Dagomba, it is often refereed to as the Yendi Skin, rather than the throne or crown.
In 2002, a violent conflict between two rival clans, took the lives of 40 people, including the gruesome killing of King Ya Na Yakubu Andani. |

sachara Fri Apr 6, 2007 20:52 UTC Great pics. In 83 at the Bawku market a policeman knocked on my shoulder and did not allow me to take pics. My Ghanaian friend and I had to explain while drinking palmwine with him. So we couldnt leave before curfew and had to look for a place to sleep. | cachaseiro Thu Feb 22, 2007 13:30 UTC that is really excellent market photos. |
