Auckland, although not the capital any more, is the biggest city in New Zealand. The city has been in existence since the Maoris inhabited this area in 1350 AD. Auckland was the capital from 1840 after the signing of the Treaty of Waitanga when it was moved from Russell, until it was moved again in 1865 to its currebt position in Wellington.
The city is named after Lord Auckland, who at the time was the Viceroy of India and a British hero.
Auckland Airport is th only place I've been where you collect your suitcases before passing through immigration. |
