Weimar

by berlingirl84 - last update: Oct 23, 2008

Weimar is one of the great cultural sites of Europe, having been home to such luminaries as Bach, Goethe, Schiller, Herder, Wieland and Liszt.

The tombs of Goethe and Schiller as well as their archives can be found in the city.

Apart from the Bauhaus University, Weimar puts up the "Liszt School of Music" and the "Duchess Anna Amalia Library" with it´s famous Rococo hall.

The most important monument to the classical period: The "National Goethe Museum".

Between sightseeing you can relax in seven country parks and numerous historical gardens - many of them are included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
But Weimar is also connected to a dark chapter in German history.

The infamous Nazi concentration camp known as Buchenwald existed between 1937 and 1945 on Ettersberg, which is close by.

Wertvolle Info. Ich muss leider gestehen, dass ich noch immer nicht in Weimar war obwohl mich dort noch viel mehr interessiert als Goethe und Schiller. Alles Gute zum Geburtstag!

Goethe ist zehr gut (I am visiting Germany next month so I've been trying to learn some basics of the German language). Great page -- I especially love the tip about the potatoes in Kartoffelhaus. Best from New Jersey, Bill
