So how do the lyrics of Murray head's one-hit wonder from the 1984 compare to the Bangkok of today?

Just the name of the city creates a mental image of historical temples, girlie bars, knock-off goods, spicy food, and a modern shoppers paradise, all within one city. Is Bangkok just one cliche; or is there more to the capital of Thailand and home to a population of more than 9 million souls?

On the surface Bangkok is just as you expect. A walk through Patpong market on a balmy night will will expose you to many of these cliches in a few hundred yards. From the mature farang with a young thai girl on his arm to the over zealous street vendor haggling over a few baht some of the excesses of the city are in plain view.
