We left Leiria on the 24th of September and our first stop was in Batalha to see the Abbey (Mosteiro da Santa Maria da Vitoria) and later we continued to Nazare, Obidos and finally to Peniche where we spent the following night. Normally I am not interested in churches but we wanted to visit this one because of its architecture and size. The abbey is a magnificient achievement by Portugues architecture - the dazzling richness and originality of its Manueline decoration to which only the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos at Belem can compete. Both of them have UNESCO world monument status. |
