We left Evora on 18th September and headed north. Our first big stop was Castelo de Vide mainly in order to visit the medieval synagogue. We also had lunch there and continued to Castelo Branco in the afternoon. |
| Our "guide" at the entrance of the synagogue |
| | Castelo de Vide is located on slopes around a 14th century castle. There is a Judiaria - the old jewish quarter with twisting alleyways. Among the cottages, most of which still have Gothic doorways and windows, is a 13th century synagogue, the oldest one that survived in Portugal. From outside it doesn't look different from the other cottages. We had to ask directions because we got hopelessly lost in the alleyways,an old man joined us and showed us the way. |
