We left Beja on 17th September and drove to Evora. It was very hot and our first impresssions weren't good. The pension we stayed at was strange (see the accommodation tip and the travelogue) and the whole town didn't appeal to us much. It was very expensive, many tourists still even though it was mid September and again it was really hot. I can only imagine how it was in August! We stayed one night, saw the main sights and were happy to continue towards north on the day after.
Roman and Moorish occupations have left their marks on Evora. The Roman era is seen from the temple and the Moorish era left characteristic deep alleys among the white houses. But most of the monuments of the town are from the 14th centruy when Evora prospered under the patronage of the ruling House of Avis. The noble palaces around the town are from that time, as well as the Jesuit university that was founded in 1559. Today the population of 50000 is only half of its medieval number. |

Great Travelogue pics of your walks in town as well as your lodgings.
