We had left Leiria on 24th Sept 2004, visited Batalha, Nazare and Obidos on the way and reached Peniche in the late afternoon. The plan was to stay the night here and cruise to the Berlenga Island in the morning. The place we chose was Katekero (again mentioned in The Rough Guide to Portugal) that was in the sea front. It is above a restaurant with the same name and you need to contact the staff there to get a room. The waiter brought us the "mama" of the family as it looked like, she didn't know any English but I managed to figure out what was needed. The room cost 25 Euro for double, very good value, was just above the restaurant (with the grilled smells entering the room) and had great views to the harbour with many ships and fishing boats. The room was very basic, but good. It had TV in it but only Portuguese channels. The view, the smell of the sea and the screams of the seagulls made it luxury for us and we enjoyed our stay. We also had a good meal at the restaurant. There was no breakfast but we managed with things we bought from the Supermarket (Minipreco is very cheap and great value, look for products that have the brand "dia" on them with a red stripe)
