If you ask me what were my favorite places in Portugal, the definite answer is: 1. Lisbon 2. Peniche and Berlenga Island
24th of September was a busy day for us as we visited several places. We had left Leiria on the morning of the 24th of September and visited Batalha Nazare and Obidoson the way and we arrived in Peniche in the afternoon. We spent the night there and on the following day we went on a cruise to Berlenga Island and after the cruise continued to Colares via Ericeira. We were happy to find a room facing the sea at Katekero which we had read about in the Rough Guide to Portugal. There was still heavy fog (as had been in Nazare) when we arrived and we couldn't see much, but it cleared up in the evening and the next day was clear and sunny. If you love fishing ports, you will love Peniche! Peniche is impressively closed by ramparts and it is one of the most active fishing ports of the country. It is the embarkation point for the Ilha Berlenga (See my site for the island!). At 15th century the town was still an island, but the area has joined the mainland and has beaches on either side of it. The main attraction is the fortress at the south side. There are wonderful fish and seafood restaurants at the sea front. The place it not touristy. Unfortunately there is lots of development along the coast and that doesn't look nice, but the town itself is lovely. |
