When entering Sines through the outskirts you will not be impressed, just like in many other Portuguese towns. There is a massive oil refinery, new roads, railways, pipelines and wells. But the center of the town that has remained relatively unspoiled and still keeps its old character, is an interesting place to visit and definitely a good spot to have a lunch if you are on your way to Algarve from Lisbon as we were. We drove along smaller roads and avoided the highway in order to see more and that certainly paid. There are lovely houses and restaurants facing the sea and several beaches. The center is dominated by the castle facing the sea and in front of it you see a statue of Vasco da Gama looking out to the sea. Vasco da Gama was born in Sines. |
| | It is nice just to walk around and enjoy the beautiful sea views of Sines. A great stop when driving south. |
