Volcan Pacay is a half day trip from Antigua.
You simply get a guide and bus to the volcano and then walk the volcano. Its easy to begin with, nice track through woods. This all ends when the top is reached, an hour or so of scrambling up loose volcanic ash that gets progressively hotter. top is great if its not cloudless and the volcan is grumpy enough to be spitting lava. We were. Going down is a fast controlled slide and extremely good fun.

Tikal is a definite must see. From Antigua or elsewhere. We took a weekend trip including flights and hotel, although you can do it by bus. Our hotel, Tikal Inn, was right next to the ruins and the rooms were fine. Electricity is only on for certain hours which makes the 5am sunrise interesting! lunch and breakfast was included. Dinner was had at the place next door and to say it was slow was the understatement of the year, the bill took 45 minutes and many requests.......

ruins are spectacular and some fun climbing was had. Setting is hot and sweat take the bug spray. Plus it was the Rebel Base in the original Star Wars

Okay its not really close to Antigua but, its a definite. I loved it. As with lots of Antigua trips, easier to do in tourist minibus and as with all tourist minibuses an early start 5am seems to be about right. 6 hours later you are dropped in Ruinas de Copan, the toen that is. Border is interesting as you get a passport stamp in your passport and visa on a slip of paper if you are only going to the ruins. Plenty of hotels and restaurants. Museum at site a must, Jaguar tunnels are an interesting aside, get to see in side the pyramids and unique in all the ruins i{ve been to. Prices add up though, get together with others and hire a guide.
