Gliwice - The pearl of Upper Silesian region

by Misiex - last update: Jun 25, 2004

Welcome to my hometown!

Gliwice Broadcoasting Station Radio Mast
Gliwice - a town of about 200,000 inhabitants, situated in the southern Poland. Gliwice is a part of a big Silesian conurbation which is created by a different cities, formaly the capital city of this region is Katowice, which are 30 kilometers away from here. The Silesian conurbation is a home for almost 5 mln people - that's the biggest concentration of people in Poland.

Gliwice stray from the conventional Upper Silesian towns. Ages of history engraved themselves on many preserved buildings and in the mediaeval system of streets of the old town.

Moreover, influences of the latest history have been considerable - a widely known symbol, among others, is the Gliwice Broadcasting Station.

Gliwice is a mixture of "border line" elements - Polish, German, Czech, as well as Jewish and Armenian influences can be found here. Descendants of autochtonous inhabitants of the Upper Silesia and persons arriving from different parts of the country, of whom repatriates from the Polish borderland, live and act jointly in Gliwice.

Contemporary Gliwice is a town of culture, science and initiative with aspirations for the seizure of the position of one of the administrative centres in the Silesian region and a town entering the XXIst century in a European.

Some newest history:

"On 31 August 1939 there was a simulated attack upon the radio station (present Tarnogórska Street). The event was supposed to give the German army a pretext for invading Poland" - so here the Second World War began.
