Travelling to Beijing on wheel chairs is a real problem. Almost all the monuments such as Forbidden city, summer palace and great wall are full of steps and staircases. Unless there are people to help move the wheel chair, some of these places are inaccessible if on wheelchairs.

The air in the city is very polluted and dirty. Almost everyday the city is covered in smog. We thought the smog is because the weather is cold but no, it is because of the heavy traffic. The weather is extremely dry too, even during summer season, it is very hot but dry. My lips cracked badly and throat was sore after a few days

Toilets are in very bad conditions. Especially in places like Great Wall and Forbidden city. For those with disability or on wheel chairs, there are very few toilets specially for wheel chair bound people. People also tend to abuse these toilets when they see nobody is using the toilets. However, the toilets at the Beijing Airport is very well cleaned and flushing system is alright.

Warnings Or Dangers: Paying extra

There are a lot of services that we have to pay extra in this city. One example is at the airport where we want to use a tape to secure our luggage case. We didn't notice the note saying that we have to pay extra. And the personnel in charge didn't mention a word until he asked us to pay up. We were very angry and thought that he should have warned us before we took a tape from the dispenser. Another place is the temple where people are doing prayers. Even if people want to make special prayers, they have to pay extra for a package consisting of special items used for prayers. This practice is very different from Singapore where people do not have to pay extra at all.

The bus ride to Chengde took about 5 hours! Not only it is long and tiring, some of the roads are very bumpy and rough. As the bus will travel along the outskirts of Beijing. However, one will get to see some nice scenery of mountains and some unrestored parts of the Great Wall. It is better to travel by train as it took less than 3 hours to reach Chengde from Beijing and the express trains are quite comfortable too.
