Hotel Triton claims to be a groovy hotel, but despite the funky looking tables and cupboard, I did not see much of grooviness in the actual room. The rooms have been renovated a few years ago, and they start to show some aging already. The design elements are just attached on the surface and otherwise the room is very basic US hotel; ugly walls, stained wall-to-wall carpet and inadequately sound-proofed windows. The staff is very friendly and the service is swift. The location is excellent, just a few blocks from the Union Square and at the other end of the Chinatown. The streets are noisy, especially during weekend nights, so try to get a room on the upper floors.

The Mosser Hotel: Boutique Hotel with Excellent Location

The Mosser is a sort of boutique hotel in the very heart of San Francisco on Fourth Street. Market Street with all its shops is just stone throw away and SFMoMA is just across a park. The hotel has been recently redesigned, so the rooms are airy and stocked with good amenities. Note that you'll have to share bathroom with other travellers, unless you book a deluxe room.

Hotel Palomar is a largish Kimpton boutique hotel located at the corner of Market Street and 4th Street -- in other words, just in the middle of everything in San Francisco. The rooms are decorated with good quality materials and the colour scheme is subdued and relaxed. The big bed is really comfortable, and the bedclothes are excellent -- not the usual crap of US hotels. The hotel is also very quiet, but I had a room facing the inner yard; the rooms facing Market Street might be noisier. Service at the front desk is swift, but not very thorough. They managed not to join two consecutive reservations to one -- I told about it only twice... Well, the situation was corrected pretty fast.

Hotel Monaco: Hotel with rich décor

Hotel Monaco belongs to chain of boutique hotels operated by Kimpton hotel group. The hotels are distinctive in their look and feel. The theme for Hotel Monaco is good old days, when people travelled on ships and horses. The room was compact, but not too small. The bed itself was quite a sight, looking like a bed of dreams of all small princesses, with curtains and everything. The washroom was stocked with all relevant amenities, and the hotel promises to provide more, if required. The location on Geary street is quite central, a few blocks from Union Square. There are a selection of good and inexpensive restaurants nearby. However, the street deteriorates fast when you walk away from the square towards Tenderloin area.

When I told to people living in the Bay area that I will spend a few night in Hotel Nikko, they all said that it is a really nice hotel. Either they have never been here or there is a difference between their and my standards. The hotel room is big and the amenities in the bathroom are ok. However, the whole hotel has a bit run-down feeling, there is no bathrobe or slippers, the quilt is too thin to be warm enough, and the furniture is ugly. I could continue the list, but you get the picture. If you do not mind these things -- and thus feel at home in almost any US hotel -- this is a great choice, as the location is excellent, there is a good gym, indoor pool, sauna, a good restaurant and host of other stuff. The only issue is the steep price.

Donatello Hotel: A pleasant surprise

We got a dirt cheap room from The Donatello, and thus we were fearing for the worst. Fortunately, the hotel exceeded our expectations in all fronts. The rooms were big and airy; our family of four fit in nicely, the sofa doubled as an extra bed and there were plenty of room for the crib, too. The room was equipped with wet bar, microwave oven and empty fridge -- all excellent items for people travelling with smaller children. The service was really friendly and courteous. There was a free, albeit small, breakfast buffet on the club floor at the top of the building. Coffee, orange juice, and muffins kicked the day off fine. An additional pleasant surprise for us Finns for a proper Finnish sauna -- made in the US by a company established by a Finn. The location is also very good, a block from Union Square, a lot of cafés, restaurants and small convenience stores around. All major car rental companies in a walking distance. All this was $160 per nigh + tax. Your mileage with the price may vary.
