A little about everything As the Capital City of my country, Mexico City is a sample of the most important things in Mexico. This is great for tourists if you are traveling to other places in Mexico you will leave the city knowing a lot from my country and with an idea of what other cities are worth visiting. If you are only visiting Mexico City you will leave knowing you saw some of the best things my country has to offer. There aren't important archeological sites in the city, but in the anthropology museum, probably the best museum in the country, you can find great archeological pieces of many of our ancient civilizations such as aztecs and mayans. Downtown and Coyoacán are two places with great colonial buildings. and we have places for the lovers of nature like Xochimilco and Chapultepec park. Mexico City also has the best museums in the country and great cultural events which are very hard to find in other places in the country. |
The problems of the city Unfortunately Mexico City also has some of the worst problems of the country, independent travel is hard, as there are almost no signs directing the tourist to the places you may see. Subway is the only way to move quicly and secure around the city, as there are a lot of pirate taxis and the buses are uncomfortable and insecure, also the drivers will hardly speak another language appart from spanish and will be hardly able to orient you. the subway covers many of the interest areas but not all the city.
downtown is considered a world heritage site, but the goverment and the people do not protect it, every street is filled with street sellers inavading the streets and drumsticks wich makes driving and walking hard and stressing, and instead of restoring and protecting our historical buildings our goverment rathers building big skyscrapers in an effort to look like New York, we should know and protect what we have instead of neglect from it and try to be something else.
Every city in my country I have visited used to had the same troubles, but they have gotten over them and today their downtowns and historical zones are protected, promoted and tourist friendly, and everywhere you see people appreciating their heritage and commited to protect it, that means that it is not immpossible to solve Mexico City problems, but we won't do it until we commit to it. |
Distrito federal The city is far too big, the biggest in the world, and it has swallowed every city and town in the federal district as well as many municipalities in the estate of Mexico, if our growing rate does not decrease the city will soon extend to cover some places in the states of Hidalgo, Morelos and Puebla. this has regetably turned all the suburbs in disorganized and polluted places, and much of their patrimony has been destroyed.
But in many places around the city you will still found places that have protected their patrimony and that are usually unknown for the tourist that almoast always just travels in the downtown and in places like Coyoacán and Xochimilco. In Virtual Tourist many of this old places that are know part of Mexico City appear as independent destinations, this have the advantage that if you want to visit any of those places you may go to that destination page and found information about it more easily, in this Mexico City page I will just write about downtown and some surrounding areas, I will write about those other places in their independent pages even if they belong to Mexico City. |
