Singapore The Merlion City

by and_juana - last update: Feb 17, 2005

My Singapore The "Fine" City

The symbol of Singapore, Merlion.
Singapore is the capital by name. A brief about where Singapore comes from tag with an interesting story behind Singapore's modern day name. During the 14th century, the visiting Prince Sri Vijayan spotted an animal which he though was a lion (it was not a lion), and thus gave the place a new name - 'Singha Pura' (Singapura spell in Malay) or ' Lion City'!

Singapore is located on the southernmost extremity of the Malay Peninsula. Over the years, Singapore has attracted thousands of migrants, and its population o 3 million is made up of 77.3% Chinese, 14.1% Malays, 7.3% Indians and 1.3% people of other descent. Singapore has four official languages, Malay, Mandarin, English and Tamil. So it is an intriguing kaleidoscope of culture, languages, festivals and cuisines over a stretch of about 640 sq. km.

Singapore government is strict to the point of being paternalistic. Littering is regarded as an offence and carries a fine. However, the government is efficient, faster and more responsive. Approvals are very fast in coming, especially where applications for doing business, making investments, etc., are concerned. Kudos!

Today, Singapore is a thriving centre of commerce and industry. Singapore has proudly achieve the world's best airport, the best airlines and the best workforce. A modern metropolis with a dynamic economy, a high standard of living, ever-increasing career opportunities and a Garden-city livingenvironment, make Singapore an ideal place to work and live in despite a density of population of almost 5,000 people per sq. km!
This was where it used to be located

View from the padang

The very first view of the Merlion. Merlion Park would be the first park you sould visit which is located next to Marina Bay on the city's edge.

It is named for Singapore's tourism symbol the Merlion, half fish, half lion, and contains a statue of the Merlion overlooking Marina Bay.
Singapura ohh Singapura....

Singapore Flag

T The colours of the Singapore flag represent red for brotherhood and equality; white for purity and virtue. The crescent moon originally served as a symbol of assurance to the Malays in 1959 ?the year the flag was designed? that Singapore was not a Chinese state. Today it is generally said that the moon signified a young nation rising.
