looking for somewhere a little different, this is the place. Downstairs is laid out like a traditional resturant but upstairs you can lounge on the floor cushions if your back can take it.
Round of a meal with a shisha (bong pipe) all legal. A place where people meet to chat, smoke and drink coffee.

Favorite Dish: Any of the vegetarian food. Staff are very willing to make suggestions.

A delightful Indian resturant that has recently won awards for its food. The outside is decorated with hanging baskets and is one of the medival building in Spon Street.
Inside there are lots of nocks and crannies, plenty of opportunity for that romantic meal. Upstairs you can book a curtained off area, where you recline on cushions. Another room is called the Kama Sutra.
The food was wodnerful and the service first class. Choice of over 100 dishes

Desi Dish: A new place to eat

This recently opened restaurant is a comtempory design with a very warm welcome. Desi is Indian for homemade or authentic. It makes a pleasant change to see such a varied menu with over 90 dishes to the menu.
Students get a 10% discount on dining in and a further 5% on take outs~ which is handy because it is close to the university.
The chef makes a point of coming to speak to guests and ask their opinions. He asks for a negative and a posiutive and claims that todays negatvies will be tomorrows positives.
A restaurant favoured by the local Indian community, so that it always a sign of authenticity. Specialises in SOuthern Indian and Punjabi style food with lots of recipes from the Chef's Grandmother.

Favorite Dish: Allo Zeera Dry potatoes cooked with cumin seeds. Lovely is the best word to describe them.
Dhingri Mattar Masala- mushrooms and snow peas was also good but a little hot for my personal taste.
The pineapple pickle didn't not work for me or my friend, but you might like it.

For a laid back lunch of bagels, etc. this cafe-bar at the botom of medevial Spon Street is the palce for you.
It transforms into a music venue at night.
I recently revisited this place and sadly it has gone down hill, poor choice of food, dirty and badly run. April 2006

Favorite Dish: Chargrilled vegetable filled bagette no longer available

Since my last tip on this wonderful palce, the resturant has been awarded the Coventry Godiva Award and updated their menu.
    Now its even better.

Favorite Dish: The mezza starters both hot and cold, but probably the stuffed vine leaves.

Flamingo Bar & Grill: Don't be fooled by the name

I would have associated the name of this new resturant with Spannish food rather than Indian. However, this place is fantastic. They specialise in sizzler style platters.
Its got a family feel and many people come in family groups, children are welcome. There is also an area to play pool and have a drink. The decore is modern. Gets busy at weekends so booking is advisable.
Staff are really helpful in explaning the large menu. Don't expect to find your usual Indian favourites. Lots of Punjabi flavours, there is even a selection of punjabi pizzas ~ didn't try so can't say what they are like. Very vibrant place.
UPDATE Recently revisited this place one evening, our evening was totally spoilt by the level of noise, the music was extremely loud, conversation was impossible and teh attitude of staff/management was "so what, put up with it" well we wont be going there again. JUNE 2006

Favorite Dish: The Jeera rice was great and my favourite main dish is the mini vegetarian combi. Portions are 2 sizes small and regular at £6 or £10 approx. A regular would easily do 2-3 people. A small was too much for me and i came out with a take home box.
Once you have picked your dish you then select the cooking style, my favourites for the veggie food were chilli style and crsipy vegetables. We also had a dish made from vine leaves (can't remember what it's called) it was great. Slightly more than a typical Indian in the area but well worth it for the size & taste.
