market town borders Yorks. Dales & Lake District

Symbol of the Yorkshire Dales
Very pretty town famous for it's school and Howgill Fell. Good base to see both the Yorkshire Dales & the Lake District, also convenient for the M6 junction 37 (5miles) for those travelling up from the south. Number of nice pubs that serve a decent pint of real ale and food. The Indian restaurant served a nice meal.
Short gentle walks along the river, coming to the Quaker hamlet of Brigflatts meeting House or more challenging going up onto the Fells Via Winder Hill 1550 ft (473 m) summit and Wainwright country.
An historic town, full of character from its narrow cobbled streets. the town is trying to establish itself as a book town, some keep an hour or so to browse. In addition to the shops Sedbergh has established a Festival of Books and Drama which takes place in August

Once you feel you have seen the dales the lake district is about 10 miles west of the town.
old packhorse bridge
This was taken during a circular walk from Garsdale Head station about 6miles of gentle hills and quiet unspoilt valeys. also a good spot to catch a train on the Settle to Carlisle Railway and its famous viaducts.

The track starts at Settle and travels north passing the famous Three Peaks - Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent (with good views of all 3 at Horton-in-Ribblesdale).

At Ribblesdale the line crosses the 24 span viaduct at Ribblehead, before entering the one and a half miles of the Blea Moor Tunnel under Whernside.

The line emerges into Dentdale at Dent Head and then on through more tunnels to Garsdale Head (at the head of Garsdale). The station at Dent is the highest point, although the tiny village of Dent is a good walk of at least 4miles away.
Sedbergh from part way up Winder Hill. The boys from the public school hold races up and down the winder.
