Holy Land

The Israel flag was taken on the sea of Galilee flying on the back of the boat.

Passages at Nimrod Fortress

We went through all kinds of passages and stairs at Nimrods Fortress on the slopes of Mt. Hermon.

Nimrod Fortress is an amazing fort from the middle ages that was a place of battle for the crusaders. The inscriptions date back to 1275. Nimrod Fortress was originally built by the Muslims, but it changed hands several times in the 12th century. The fortress was strengthened in the 13th century and most remains visible today are from that period.

The mountain is over 400 meters (1,300 ft) long, and 150 m (490 ft) in width. The summit reaches an elevation of 800 meters (2,600 ft) above sea level.

You can spend a lot of time wandering the 49 acres of steps and tunnels throughout the fortress.

Nimrod Fortress is also a possible site of the Mt. of Transfiguration. Just prior to the Transfiguration Jesus and his disciples were previously noted to be in the “region of Caesarea Philippi.” Caesarea Philippi is nearby so some think scholars put this as the site where Elijah and Moses appeared with Jesus at the Transfiguration.

Caesarea Philippi

Caesarea Philippi: The site of Peter’s confession of Christ.

Jesus took his disciples to Caesarea Philippi, the site of the temple of the Greek god Pan, one of the greatest pagan temples of the ancient world. At the temple Pan there is a cave that was referred to as the gates of Hell or Hades, the doorway to the underworld.

“The Gates of Hell will not prevail against it” refers to the guaranteed ultimate victory of Christ’s Kingdom over all pagan religions.

Matthew 16:13-19 NIV
13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
14They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
15"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"
16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
17Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
