Traditional Japan at its best - Kyoto Kyoto was the residence of the Emperor for almost 1100 years from 794 to 1868. It was Japan's political and cultural center, where architecture, sculpture, painting and other fine arts flourished. Present day Kyoto plays an important role in Shinto Buddhism. Thirty of the city's temples are centers of various Buddhist sects. There are also 200 Shinto shrines within the city limits. Spring in Kyoto is particularly beautiful with the cherry blossoms in full bloom. |
