Peterhof - the most magnificent tsarist palace

The most stunning of tsarist palaces is located in the town of Petrodvorets, 29 km west of St Petersburg. Built by Peter the Great, the immense scale of the main palace and its incredible gardens were strongly influenced by Louis XIV's Versailles Palace. The Grand Palace was almost completely gutted by the Germans in WWII and what is seen today is largely a reconstruction of its former imperial glory. The center of attraction is the Grand Cascade and the Water Avenue - a collection of 140 fountains and canals designed by Peter the Great himself.
