This place is great because you get the crazy parties and typical backpacker shops but you're still able to get away from it all on the beach. You should go soon though because they are starting to accomodate for package tourists. Phi Phi Ley and Bamboo island are close by and a great place to snorkel and swim.

Very helpful tips on the island, thanks for sharing! I was there, but unfortunately ony for two days, then heading back to Phuket. But it is a place to stay longer.... sigh,
