I grew up in a military family; I've lived in Europe, Asia, and all over the U.S. My first taste of living in the desert occurred way back in 1980, when we moved to Las Vegas. I instantly fell in love with the Mojave, and vowed to come back someday when we moved away two years later.
It took twenty years, but I finally made it back to my beloved desert! My position with the federal government brought me to Twentynine Palms. I've been here over eight years now, and, as a true "desert rat" at heart, I plan to stay for many more. I recently bought a house, a first for me. Guess I will stay awhile!
It's very easy to be yourself in Twentynine Palms. I moved to 29 from Atlanta, a city with a history of civil rights and diversity. I wasn't sure what to expect when I got here. Most military towns are very conservative in nature, but I found 29 to be very welcoming. The influx of artists, environmentalists, and others with worldly views is changing the social dynamics of the city -- a change I wholeheartedly support and welcome.
I thought I might be the only "out" gay person in town, but quickly realized that that wasn't the case. It's just that folks are more relaxed here, and aren't flamboyant or pretentious as is most often the case in the city. Over the past few years, I have noticed an increase in GLBT travelers to our fair city in the desert, and it makes me happy and proud. I'm glad that folks are discovering just how wonderful and special 29 is, and hope they'll be back to visit in the near future.
