The Fortress | Domat al Jandal, Qasr Marid |
Thirty miles from Sakaka is the oasis town of Domat Al-Jandal where ancient trade routes crisscrossed in antiquity. Here there's another spectacular fortress, Qasr Marid, built atop Nabataean foundations. It is said that Queen Zenobia of Palmyra (now in Syria) attacked the fortress unsuccessfully in A.D. 27.0. |

| | The Oasis Looking like a gigantic sandcastle, Qasr Marid bristles with towers and remnants of buildings within its now-ruined walls. At its base lie the remains of the settlement which once surrounded it, portions of which are a thousand years old. Here also is the Mosque of Omar, supposedly founded in the seventh century A.D. by the second caliph, Omar Bin Al-Khattab.
