Why Gouda?

Well, why not?
Gouda is not a major tourist destination but our next door neighbours from Lara (Vic, Aust) had returned to his homeland. So to Gouda we went! It is a city in the most densely populated country in the world. It's a city which, like so many others is one of contrast .... a pleasant mix of old and new. It is typically Dutch with canals, bike paths, traditional buildings and flowers in various nooks and crannies.
When I was there it wasn't busy and we were able to wander around quite freely.

Exploring

Cities, like Gouda, that have so many trees issue a welcome to the traveller. To be able to walk by the water under the shade of the trees as I explored its streets and took in the whole gammut of Dutch architecture, was an experience to be enjoyed. Don't use a tour bus where certain aspects of a city are highlighted until you have done some exploring on your own ..... on foot or on a pushbike!

Country or city?

In my meanderings around Gouda I was delighted to find this tranquil scene within a ten minute walk of the Town Hall. There are not many cities where such a "country" scene can be located right near the hub! ......... and you would not see it if you took a tour!

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:easily accessable, pretty, good side-walk cafes& restaurants near the old Town Hall
  • In a nutshell:An un-heralded gem
