Jerome was created in 1876 and was once the 4th largest city in Arizona. The town sits on one of the largest copper mines in Arizona and at one time produced 3 million pounds of copper a month. The town was once called the wickedest town in the West due to the number of saloon and brothels in the area. The town began to decline during the time of the Depression and by 1953 the last mine was closed. To save the town residents created the Jerome historical society and stated that Jerome was America’s newest and largest ghost city. |

When here you are given an opportunity to step back in time. You can see old buildings, abandoned railroad tracks in the mountains and old mining equipment. There is even a post office here founded in 1883 that is still active and in use. Today, many artist, craftspeople, writers and musicians are moving to the area. This is possible for the great views. When we visited numerous biker converged on one of the bars in town. It is a great place to visit when you try to imagine it in it’s hey days. | | |
