Getting TO/AROUND: if you are visiting Paris for more than 3 days, get a Carte Orange. :)

you can buy it at every metro station, you just need to have a picture of yourself. the card itself is free, and you can buy weekly and monthly travel passes once you have it, wich is way cheaper, and more convenient than having to buy and handle a bunch of tickets. if you don't get a little map with the pass (as on the pic), ask for it, it's the best way to avoid getting lost... :)
weekly passes (hebdo) are good from monday 00h to sunday 24h, monthly passes (mensuel) are from the 1st day till the last day of the month.

Getting TO/AROUND: the city itself is quite small actually, what you see on the maps to be huge is the city AND the suburbs, which are (in the case of transportation) NOT paris.
inside the boulevard Peripheric (which goes all the way around the city, app 34 km) is Paris, as the RATP knows it. that's Zone 1. a tiny bit further is Zone 2. a little bit further again it's Zone 3, and so on.

you should consider, if you want to travel around the city, it is best to buy a Zone 1-2 pass, and if you decide to go off-town, you can buy a ticket for that single journey.
but if you are planning to go to the surrounding areas mostly (for eg: chateau de Versailles, Orly is Zone 4, Disneyland, CDG is Zone 5) you maybe should buy a pass which is ok there as well, but it's getting more and more expensive, as you get further from town.
NOTE: the airports (both Orly and CDG) are with special tarifs, it is not enough to have a ticket to zone 4 or 5.

for the prices check out the website.

RER (Regional Trains): not that nice, but the fastest :)

Getting TO/AROUND: it is a sort of train (RER stands for Reseau Express Regional - a fast suburban train), which i use a lot.
not that fancy, as some of the metro lines, but the fastest way to take distances (for eg. RER A goes from north-west to south-east of town in app 18 minutes, and 5 stops)

if u come to use the new double-decked ones: be prepared, they notify you of the upcoming station (twice) before u get there, quite loudly. one time it scared me so badly, i dropped the book i was reading :)))

Very helpful tips and nice photos. But I beg to differ. Paris, in my opinion, gets even better after a couple of weeks!
