Two of my co-workers at Taverne Jos Dion
This little tavern has been around since 1933, which makes it the oldest bar still in operation in the city. It's always been a blue-collar sort of place - and it still is - but more and more visitors are dropping by to get a taste of the tavern's authentic atmosphere, and you don't have to worry about feeling out of place: the staff will make sure to give you a warm, friendly welcome. Beer is not expensive, and if you come at lunch time you can arrange to have some pizza delivered from the place next door. Happy hour is usually a busy time, with the typical crowd of workers dropping by for a drink or two before heading home, and the place also gets pretty lively in the evening whenever there's a hockey game on TV. It truly is a fun and unique place to go for those looking to enjoy a real local experience!

That rich color is enough to make you thirsty!
Brewing beer in Quebec City is a tradition that goes back to the days of La Nouvelle-France, at the beginning of the 17th century. 400 years later, L'Inox is proud to keep the tradition alive with its delicious regular and seasonal beers! The "Trouble-Fete" is probably the most popular of them all: served with a slice of lime, this flavorful wheat beer will warm you up on a cold day and freshen you up in the summertime :o)
L'Inox has a great sunny patio that is very popular in the summertime, and if you're hungry they serve nachos and European-style hotdogs.

Bar Le Sacrilege, Quebec City
Le Sacrilege is located on St-Jean Street, close to the Vieux Quebec, but on the West side of the walls. Its great location makes it one of the locals' favorite spots to hang out as it is close enough to the downtown area, yet just outside of the very touristy areas. The Sacrilege is the kind of place where you go to chat with your friends while enjoying a cold pint - it's not that big and it's got a very casual atmosphere. The music is great, but it's not too loud so it's easy to talk. During summer, you can sit out on the patio at the back of the building. A really great place for a VT meeting!

Bar Le Drague, in Quebec City
Quebec City doesn't have much of a gay village but if there was one, Le Drague would definitely be at the center of it all! It has been around for quite a while and although it prides itself in being the city's most popular gay bar, it is open to everyone, gay or straight. Located in a beautiful historic building, Le Drague offers different settings (nightclub, lounge, pub...) and different activities (improv, drag queen shows, karaoke...) to fit all of its clientele's moods. Just check out the calendar on their Web site to see what's going on!

Pub Saint-Patrick in Quebec City
Historically, the Irish have played a very important role in the development of the city so it is only befitting that we should have a really great Irish pub! The Pub Saint-Patrick is located in a nice old building that used to be an apothecary shop. The first floor has more of a restaurant feel, while the basement, with its low vaults, is definitely more pubbish. The pub offers good food at a good price, has a great selection of beer, and there's live Irish music every Friday and Saturday night. And of course, you won't want to miss celebrating St. Patty's day at the Pub, or the traditional 6 months to St. Patrick's Day celebrations!
I always order the same drink when I go there: a pint of Black Velvet. It seems that you can't get this drink everywhere (judging by the reaction I got when I ordered one at a pub in Winchester, UK) so I'll describe it for you: it's half Guinness, half Strongbow (apple cider). It takes away some of the bitterness of the beer, but at the same time it's not too sweet. And it looks great in the glass!

Chez Dagobert nightclub on Grande-Allee
The Grande-Allee could be described as Quebec City's nightclub strip, and one of the most popular nightclubs on Grande-Allee is Chez Dagobert. "Le Dag" is located in a massive brick house and it seems like it's been around forever. I remember growing up down east we were always excited at the thought of going out Chez Dagobert anytime we were in Quebec City!
Chez Dagobert has two separate dance floors - one is dedicated to house music and hip hop, with guest DJs from all around the world (it's called the urban room). The other one features live rock bands. I highly recommend going to the rock room on Thursday nights, when the Karma Kameleons are playing. Their show is a tribute to the best of 80s rock music, complete with the big hair and tight pants - it's always a big party!
Dress Code: The urban room is pretty trendy, the rock room not so much!

Pub Saint-Alexandre in Quebec City
Just down the street from the Irish Pub Saint-Patrick is the English Pub Saint-Alexandre, owned by the same family. Pub Saint-Alexandre is a very nice pub, richly decorated and yet not the least pretentious. People of all ages gather at the pub to eat, drink and catch a live band. Food is good and not expensive (don't miss the chicken supreme in a beer and maple sirup sauce!), they've got a great selection of beer (around 250) from all around the world and an impressive selection of single malts. There's live music every weekend and sometimes during the week too - bands vary from celtic to blues to rock, so make sure to check the Web site to see what's going on! And on a side note, there's a great private salon on the third floor available free of charge, perfect for reunions, family gatherings and, hem, "creative" business meetings! Also a great place to kick off the New Year!
