The few negative reviews I'd read about the Chancellor Hotel is actually what made me book it: some people complained that the rooms were too small, with no A/C, sort of like a European hotel - I was sold! The Chancellor is located on Powell Street, just a few steps away from all the action at Union Square. Its central location makes it very easy to get around on foot or by cable car, streetcar, bus or subway (there is a BART station located just down the street). The staff was great and made us feel very comfortable, and yes, our room was somewhat small, but it made it incredibly charming and cozy. The one thing that prevents me from giving it a 5-star rating is the bathroom, which was clean but a little outdated.

Unique Qualities: We loved starting everyday with the free coffee and fresh cookies that were available in the lobby! Free Internet is available in all the rooms, and there is a tourist information desk in the lobby through which you can book tours, buy postcards and batteries, etc. There's a small bar in the lobby, and there also is a restaurant called Luques - we had breakfast there one morning and it was very good and reasonably priced.
