Adelaide River Travel Guide: 20 reviews and 110 photos

My camera battery died just after this one picture at Adelaide river of a peacock wandering the grounds. A very cool bird that you will find wandering in some places - the peacock has amazing plumage, especially when the male is trying to impress and picks up his tale.

Back to the Adelaide River area however. We stopped here for a quick look at The War Cemetary which remembers the servicemen killed in the bombing of Darwin in the 40's and is home to the gravesites of many of the men who gave their lives. Some younger than myself. Which is the saddest fact as you wander reading the names and birthdates, realising that some of them didn't even live to 18 and would have faked their age.

The main tourist attraction in Adelaide river is the famous Jumping crocs. I didn't do the croc cruise, but I have heard it is fantastic and that the guides have an amazing knowledge of the crocs and the area. And of course those crocs that jump provide many a thrill.

One more recent worry that I have heard about the area along the Adelaide river is of a weed that is slowly growing on the banks of the water. A plant that is native to Africa called Mimosa was introduced to Darwins Botanical Gardens, and has spread, into a weed which is threatening the lives and population of those very jumping crocs. The crocs are apparently unable to nest or get to their nesting areas and theirfore less are being born. Another sad introduced species (kinda like those damned cane toads) threatening the local ecological system. Its awful. Lets hope they can do something about it.
